چکیده

Miami-Dade County is highly susceptible to storm surge flooding. The current Federal Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), used determine flood insurance rates for buildings, an excellent resource yet lacks attributes that could provide a finer-resolution of actual vulnerability building level characteristics from one parcel the next within same zone. This study developed novel Storm Surge Building Vulnerability (SSBV) model initial protocols developing county maps. was tested on transversal sections 1254 buildings selected Miami Beach, East Little Havana, and Sweetwater. Buildings in were determined be moderately vulnerable High-rises, masonry whose first habitable space elevated above ground constitute majority low very but 97% high are between 0 2 story tall three-quarters these have slab-on-grade finished floor elevation. Hurricane modification and adaptation in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

We investigate tropical cyclone wind and storm surge damage reduction for five areas along the Miami-Dade County coastline either by hardening buildings or by the hypothetical application of wind-wave pumps to modify storms. We calculate surge height and wind speed as functions of return period and sea surface temperature reduction by wind-wave pumps. We then estimate costs and economic losses ...

Damage Assessment from Storm Surge to Coastal Cities: Lessons from the Miami Area

Coastal cities are growing at a very rapid pace, both in population and in terms of assets; therefore, flood risk is likely to increase substantially in these areas in the absence of specific protections. In addition, great uncertainty surrounds the future evolution of hurricane intensity and sea level rise. The area of Miami represents a clear hotspot of human and economic coastal flood exposu...

Tropical Cyclone Flooding: Not Just a Coastal Storm-Surge Phenomenon

Inland riverine flooding from tropical cyclones (TCs) is responsible for significant economic losses in the United States. Yet, most hurricane loss assessment efforts are focused on coastal areas. Hurricane Irene, which struck the U.S. east coast in 2011, provides a recent and poignant example: while intense media coverage and preparation and evacuation activities focused on the projected coast...
